The sad passing of Colin Ross

Claire Robson4 Dec - 00:09

A lifelong stalwart of Holt Rugby Club

We are sad to relate the death of Colin Ross, aged 83. Colin was a lifelong stalwart of Holt Rugby Club and Jimmy Gray, our President recalls his first meeting with Colin in 1974, at an away fixture for the 3rd XV at Thurston. Colin had a unique captaincy style and was prepared to field all players who turned out for him on any given Saturday. “We took to the field with 17 players” recalled Jimmy “they won’t notice if we spread out a bit, we were told by our captain. When the referee did spot the misdemeanour Colin replied that 17 players had turned up and so what else was he supposed to do but let them all play?”
Colin was a long standing committee member at the club and was instrumental in encouraging caravan clubs to visit Bridge Road during the off season as well as him taking great care of our grounds over many years.
Colin was pre-deceased by his wife Veronica; We send our condolences to Helen, Billy and Thomas, their 3 children.
